CHAMOMILE, WILD Matricaria matricarioides

Description: Plant

Text Box: Called "pineapple weed" because it smells like pineapple to some. Growing close to the ground, up to 8" high, forming ground cover in large, patches; yellow-green flower heads without petals, pea sized, lacy or feathery leaves.

Habitat:

Full sun; poor or hard-packed soil; cracks of sidewalks, parking lots, along paths.

Uses:

This aromatic herb produces a pleasant tea. Standard uses for Matricaria spp. include sedative, tonic, digestive aid, wash for skin, sore eyelids & earache. Athabascans use it for new mothers & infants, & as a laxative. Can be added to sourdough or biscuits for flavor.

Standard chamomiles (Anthemis nobilis & M. chamomilla) are widely cultivated. Used in shampoos, washes, sachets, and sleep pillows.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Matricaria will dry quickly; high heat is not required & will diminish quality. For best aroma & flavor, leaf material should be kept to a minimum, although this will cut down your harvest yield greatly. For cosmetic or blending purposes, the whole plant may be used.
