CHICKWEED Stellaria media

Description: Plant

Text Box:  Herbaceous "weed"; succulent stems & leaves, oppo­site, egg-shaped; in mats; one vertical line of hairs located on stem, shifting about 1/4 turn with each node; small white flowers.

 

Habitat:

Disturbed soil, for example gardens.

 

Uses:

Use raw in salads & cooked as potherb in soups. Substitute for spinach. Medicinally used as salve, ointment or poultice for skin irritations, infec­tions, inflammations, burns & sores. Ointment is "refrigerant", i.e., has cooling properties.

 

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Everyone who has a garden in Alaska has a supply of chickweed. Chickweed should be dried carefully at low temperature.
