COLTSFOOT Tussilago frigida

Description: Plant

Text Box: Thick leaves on long stems up to 9" across, smooth green on top, fuzzy white underneath; creeping roots; seeds develop on cottony white tufts.

Habitat:

Tundra and forests, field edges, moist places.

Uses:

Coltsfoot is one of the most popular and useful cough remedies. Athabascans use the root to make tea to treat tuberculosis, chest troubles and sore throat. Teas and syrups made from dried leaves are also good for chest problems, asthma, bronchitis and persistent coughs. Externally, it can be applied against insect bites, inflammation, swellings and phlebitis.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Gather whole leaves in spring and summer, before they become too old and insect bitten. Turn often while drying to prevent mold.
