Description:
Plant
Habitat: Clusters on
rocks from mid to low tide from Aleutian islands and Bering Sea to
Southeast Alaska. Uses: Eaten as a
snack, or salad addition; dried
and added to soups and stews; quick fried and
eaten like potato chips. Used
in some "corn chip" formulas. Special
Harvest or Processing Comments: Gathered into bushel baskets by hand, dulse is collected at low tide. Wearing hip boots is helpful, and gloves, late in the season, are needed for warmth. Dulse is dried on net-covered racks either in the sun, or in heated sheds. |
