DULSE, DARUSU  Palmaria spp.

Description: Plant

Text Box: Dull red, rose red, reddish purple; 2-7" high; 1-5" wide.

Habitat:

Clusters on rocks from mid to low tide from Aleutian islands and Bering Sea to Southeast Alaska.

Uses:

Eaten as a snack, or salad addition; dried and added to soups and stews; quick fried and eaten like potato chips. Used in some "corn chip" formulas.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Gathered into bushel baskets by hand, dulse is collected at low tide. Wearing hip boots is helpful, and gloves, late in the season, are needed for warmth. Dulse is dried on net-covered racks either in the sun, or in heated sheds.
