NORI, LAVER, SLOOK  Porphyra spp.

Description: Plant

Text Box:  Pink to rose to purple to brown; irregular shaped blades up to 4' x 2'; sometimes almost round.

 

Habitat: Inter-tidal zone.

 

Uses:

Used, wrapped around fish and rice, to make sushi. Eaten by sailors to stave off scurvy. High vitamin C content, as well as vitamins A and B and trace minerals. Used widely by Northwest and coastal natives.

 Used in Japan. Cultured for market now in the Pacific Northwest.  Sold dried, or in toasted sheets. Nori foraging and cultivation is a billion dollar business in Japan.

Usually dried in sheets. Must be processed immedi­ately after harvesting.
