PLANTAIN Plantago major

Description: Plant

Text Box: Flat, elliptical, dark green leaves radiating from a single base, strongly ribbed lengthwise; long, slender spikes of green-white flowers grow in thick clusters at the end of thick stems.

Habitat:

Gardens, lawns, roadsides, fields, pipelines.

Uses:

Young leaves only are good to eat, prepared like spinach. Very young leaves are good raw in salads. Tea made from dried leaves is used for diarrhea, coughs, colds, and bronchitis; as a diuretic, alterative and to promote fertility.  Root is chewed for toothache.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Gather young, fresh leaves, with no signs of having been eaten by insects. Dry leaves carefully to maintain color; turn often to prevent molding.
