POPWEED, ROCKWEED  Fucus spp.

Description: Plant

Text Box:  Olive green to light tan; 3-7" long; small discoid holdfast; repeatedly and equally branched - branch tips are swollen and covered with fruiting bodies.

 

Habitat:

Upper to mid-inter-tidal zone – high rocks and ledges.

 

Uses:

Dena'ina dry Fucus and use it as seasoning. A choice seaweed, eaten raw or cooked in soup or stir-fried. Turns bright green when heated. Used as a blood anticoagulant, for its iodine, and against obesity and goiter.

 Sold dried in U. S. for "bladderwrack tea." Good source for fertilizer and good mulch.

 

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Harvest in late spring and summer. Cut upper branches with scissors.
