REINDEER MOSS  Cladonia randiferina & spp.

Description: Plant

Text Box: Branches and stems resemble tiny trees or bushes, or coral. Crisp and brittle in dry weather, soft in wet weather.

Habitat:

On open ground, in light shade - on slopes or depressions where snow will accumulate in winter.

Uses:

Athabascans have used Reindeer moss for food.  It is boiled or soaked in hot water until soft, then eaten plain or with berries, fish eggs or grease.

It can be used in potpourri, or on ornamental creations.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Clean moss by washing if necessary. If you pack it dry, it must be in a box or rigid container, to keep it from crumbling.
