ROSEROOT Sedum roseum

Description: Plant

Text Box: Succulent, thick leaves; tiny reddish to purple flowers in clusters 1 to 2 inches across; thick, fleshy, aromatic root.

Habitat:

Sandy to rocky soils, full sun, middle to high elevation.

Uses:

Roseroot tea is used by Dena'ina as an eyewash, or as a drink for colds, sore throat and mouth sores, or as a dressing for cuts.

The aromatic root has a rose-like fragrance, which might be valuable if extracted.

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Digging the root kills the whole plant, so extreme care must be taken not to over harvest wild stands. If the market for roseroot fragrance could be established, the plant would need to be cultivated.
