SHEPHERD'S PURSE  Capsella bursa-pastoris

Description: Plant

Text Box:  Basal leaves, lance shaped; stem leaves smaller, lance shaped; simple white flowers; triangular fruits high on the stem.

 

Habitat:

Rich disturbed soils, gardens, fields.

 

Uses:

May be eaten raw in salads, or cooked as a potherb. Contains vitamin K, which is useful for blood clotting. Used to stop internal bleeding and to soothe irritation of the excretory system.

 

Special Harvest or Processing Comments:

Gather from gardens and fields. Be sure these areas have not been subjected to toxic chemical spraying.
